Learning about the ground beneath our feet, one question at a time.
DACTION took the Summit to TELNET International Schools in Akure and delivered a program built entirely around the EARTH element to 81 students, with 4 teachers joining in: how food, waste, and soil all connect, and what young people can actually do about it. The day opened with an interactive keynote tying the topic to the Sustainable Development Goals on zero hunger and life on land, walking through the problems facing food systems and land, trash, unsustainable farming, food waste, deforestation, and the practical solutions to each. Students came up to answer questions as the session went.
From there, the Summit moved into a walkthrough on four printed flyers covering the soil crisis and a youth action challenge, each carrying a QR code so interested students could join Planeteer Alliance's PlaneteerHQ when they are home. The centerpiece of the day was a live gardening demonstration by Pius Odeh, a young student farmer who walked students through growing yam, plantain, maize, okra, and two vegetable species without chemical fertilizer, covering planting technique, ridges, erosion control, and matching soil to crop, split across four groups so everyone could get close to the materials.
The day closed with a quiz and game session, six student teams competing on what they'd learned, with prizes awarded to the top performing students, followed by an award of participation presented to the school for hosting, then refreshments, and group photos.
